Job Summary:
The Software Engineering Manager is responsible for the department staff, project activities, and maintenance of engineering objectives and initiatives within the software engineering group. The Software Engineering Manager develops team intellectual capital respective to both individual staff and overall department skillset.
The Software Engineering Manager is responsible for the creation and improvement of avionics software products within civil and military airspace. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Will perform a variety of tasks, and lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. The Software Engineering Manager is the center of competence for the software design group.
Essential Functions:
- Provide leadership and management for aviation software product development and sustaining programs and activities
- Ensure all software development and verification activities comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and best practices (e.g., ISO, IEEE, DO-178C, DO-330, DO-331)
- Oversee software certification processes, including audits and reviews, to meet regulatory and customer requirements (e.g., SOI audits)
- Allocate software engineering resources effectively to ensure timely delivery of software deliverables, including prototypes, documentation, and test plans.
- Establish and monitor department budgets
- Encourage and provide opportunity for continued relevant technical training
- Establish and maintain design guidelines and design processes, continuously review and optimize workflows and provide technical guidance and mentorship to the software engineering team ensuring best practices in coding, design, and architecture
- Provide interface and direct/indirect support to outside suppliers, 3rd party development activities, and customer product integration
- Develop, enhance and maintain a core Software engineering team locally and offshore, as well as an external network of consultants, contractors and suppliers to support product development
- Lead technical coordination of software development aspects for new business proposals and associated bids
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with software development, including technical challenges, resource constraints, and schedule delays
- Evaluate, select, and implement software development tools and technologies to support team productivity and project needs
- Lead kaizen events and master a variety of CBS tools
- Any other tasks as assigned by supervisor or management
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience: 7+ years’ related software engineering experience. 2 years’ supervisory experience in a regulated industry
- Demonstrated experience with relevant aviation or aerospace standards and practices
- Demonstrated strong customer orientation
- Familiar with a variety of the software concepts, practices, and procedures
- Expertise in planning, test/validation, analyzing and managing software requirements and configuration in accordance with RTCA DO-178, DO-330, DO-331, or other industry equivalents
- Understanding of safety-critical software development and certification processes
- Education/Certification: BS in CS, EE, Aerospace or related field
- Skills/Abilities: Demonstrated ability to leverage critical thinking and sound judgment to plan and achieve goals, drawing on extensive experience and a deep understanding of complex systems, project dynamics, and business needs; Demonstrated ADVANCED skills in all of the following responsibilities: employee development, team building, business acumen, continuous improvement, systems and tools, project management and communication (written and verbal)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Direct experience interfacing with certification authorities (FAA, EASA, CAAC, etc.)
- Skills in optimizing system performance, including timing analysis and resource allocation
- Direct experience with Software Modelling tools or processes
- Deep understanding of embedded systems: Proficiency in programming languages like C and C++
- Knowledge of communication interfaces (SPI, I2C, CAN, ARINC 429, AFDX)
- Experience with Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) and familiarity with ARINC 653
- Eligibility Requirement: This position may require access to Controlled Data or Information. Where the position requires such access only US Persons will be considered. As a US Department of Defense contractor, we are bound by International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)
Top Benefits:
Salary range: $145,100.00 to $202,200.00. Several factors contribute to actual salary, including experience in a similar role or performing comparable job responsibilities, skills, training, and other qualifications. Some roles may be eligible for participation in performance-based bonus programs.
