Northrop Grumman Mission System’s Engineering and Sciences (E&S) Baltimore and Partnered Sites (BaPs) Division is seeking a Software Architecture – Embedded Software Engineering Section Lead in our BWI facility in Baltimore, MD and will require 100 on-site work.  

The Software Architecture – Embedded Software Engineering Section Lead will own the strategy, design, delivery, and operational excellence of a team of engineers tasked with creating shared architectures, reusable code libraries, and driving reuse across projects that use languages such as C/C++, Python, Java, C, and others. This role combines deep technical leadership with people‑management responsibilities, fostering a culture of rapid iteration, modern engineering practices, and scalable architecture for distributed, real‑time, high‑throughput systems. 

What You’ll Get to Do:  

You will be accountable for driving performance excellence, providing people leadership, and accelerating business growth, requiring a broad skill set that balances technical expertise, interpersonal acumen, and business insight. The ideal candidate operates independently against strategic objectives while thriving in a collaborative team environment, and can seamlessly partner across divisions and sectors to achieve team goals. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, setting and executing performance targets, mentoring and developing staff, identifying and capitalizing on growth opportunities, and coordinating cross‑functional initiatives that align with the organization’s strategic vision. 

  • Engineering Execution: Accountable for engineering cost, schedule, and technical performance through oversight of engineering reviews, Root Cause and Corrective Actions (RCCAs), engineering metrics, audits, and general program execution.  

  • Business Development: Functional oversight of bid and proposal inputs for future work, independent technical reviews of major programs and Research and Development (R&D) projects. 

  • Hiring and Staffing: Support hiring goals through network events, interviewing, and intern/Pathway placements.  Understanding workforce management tool (currently WLF) to make certain programs are staffed as effectively and efficiently as possible.  Be creative in solutions such as engaging remote site and using contract labor. 

  • Talent Management: Identify skills mix based on business needs and forecast needs for experienced hires, college graduates and interns. Build and execute strategy for full life-cycle talent management; hire, retain, deploy and develop diverse teams. 

  • Budget Management: Manage indirect spending to meet overhead ratio and utilization goals. 

  • Workforce Engagement and Knowledge Building: Build diverse and inclusive teams with high levels of engagement through knowledge sharing, mentoring and coaching.  Encourage pervasive knowledge base building that supports new hire acclimation and succession needs. 

This position is contingent on the successful transfer of an active DoD Secret clearance and the ability to obtain Special Program Access.  

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 8 years of experience, a Master’s degree with 6 years of experience, or a PhD with 4 years of experience in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or related technical fields.  

  • U.S Citizenship is required. 

  • An active DoD Secret Clearance.  

  • Ability to obtain Special Program Access (SAP).  

  • 5 years demonstrated success leading multiple large, distributed engineering teams focused on software engineering, preferably for secure, embedded, resource (SWaPc) constrained, or tactical processing.  

  • Experienced in software engineering processes and tailoring. 

  • High proficiency in technical solution development. 

  • Experience with program execution, staffing, engineering metrics and training resources, processes, and tools. 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Advanced degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related technical fields. 

  • Experience developing technology strategy and roadmaps across BUs, divisions, and sectors. 

  • Active DoD Top Secret/SCI Clearance or higher. 

  • Experience in defense or aerospace industries. 

  • Experience delivering complex embedded hardware and software solutions on time and within budget.   

  • Demonstrated track record of software reuse initiatives that produced shared solutions adopted across multiple contracts, with measurable ROI. 

  • Familiarity with DoD/IC program protection guidance, export control constraints, and SWaPC3 optimization. 

  • Experience mentoring senior engineers and building diverse, high‑performing technical teams in a matrixed, multi‑site environment. 

  • Familiarity with DevSecOps, CI/CD tools, Agile, and infrastructure as code (Terraform, CloudFormation). 

  • Proven technical management experience preferably in either program profit and loss or integrated product team.

Primary Level Salary Range: $184,300.00 - $276,500.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
