Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Lead Engineer - Mechatronics is to lead and execute projects focused on electromechanical, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems for advanced inspection, repair, or manufacturing within the aerospace industry. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Execute the design, selection, analysis, system integration, testing and product implementation of robotic manipulators, sensors, actuators, controllers, and electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems
  • Work with other support functions and/or external suppliers to meet project deliverables
  • Prepare and participate in project and technical reviews
  • Develop and mature design or analysis tools for advanced electromechanical and other robotic/mechatronic systems
  • Provide expertise to help resolve technical challenges across the organization
  • Collaborate in the development of internal and external project proposals and initiatives
  • Protect intellectual property through the generation of patents
  • Provide technical guidance and direction across the group to grow overall technical capability and product knowledge in technical focus areas
  • Provide technical development across the organization through effective coaching/mentoring
  • Foster a multidisciplinary, collaborative, and inclusive team environment

Required Qualifications

This Lead Engineer role requires a PhD with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or Applied Mechanics, or an MS with a minimum of 6 years of industrial experience in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, or Applied Mechanics.  Additionally, the role requires:

  • Experience with the design, selection, analysis, fabrication, testing, and troubleshooting of electromechanical systems and control software (e.g., robotic manipulators, mechanical linkages, hydraulic/pneumatic circuits, mechatronic sensors, and actuators)
  • Experience with the complete design process, including conceptual design, detailed design, geometrical fits and tolerances, testing, validation, and product implementation
  • Experience with product design constraints, manufacturing techniques, and material processing selections
  • Proficiency using 3D solid modeling software (e.g., NX, SOLIDWORKS, Creo)
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Results-oriented execution mindset with a sense of urgency
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet aggressive deadlines
  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in a global team environment
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally

Desired Characteristics

This role needs an individual who is self-driven, motivated, and willing to take an idea from proposal to product! Additional characteristics being sought include:

  • Experience with custom (e.g. bio-inspired) robot design or confined space access and inspection
  • Experience with electrical system design
  • Experience in developing actuators and end effectors for harsh environments, including for high vibrations, high temperature, high force machining operations, etc.
  • Extensive testing of electromechanical components and systems, data acquisition, data reduction and design validation.  Proficiency using LabVIEW, MATLAB, microcontroller and DAQ (data acquisition system).
  • Experience in lumped parameter system modeling for electromechanical, thermal, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems
  • Experience in simulation of kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms and electromechanical systems. Proficiency in building system models using tools such as Simscape, Adams, MapleSim.
  • Experience in the use of smart structures and materials such as piezoelectric, shape memory alloys, electroactive polymers, electro- and magnetorheological fluids, MEMs, flexible sensors, or origami/deployable mechanisms for developing novel actuators and sensors
  • Experience in building data acquisition and/or control system using NI (National Instrument with LabView), Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and PLC

The base pay range for this position is $90,000 - $175,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on April 16, 2024
