Metrology Specialist / Calibration Technician – Precision Measurement Laboratory(2 Openings – New Metrology Lab Opened Nov 2024)
We are seeking highly motivated Calibration Technicians to join our brand‑new Precision Measurement Laboratory (PML) at Starbase. This facility has already doubled its device count since opening—and we expect to double again. These roles are critical hands‑on positions supporting the calibration, repair, and management of over 80,000 assets, with a heavy focus on torque, dimensional, and electronic measurement systems.
This position is ideal for candidates with formal military metrology training (PMEL/TMDE), commercial calibration experience, and individuals who thrive in lean, fast‑moving environments.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Perform calibration, verification, repair, and basic maintenance on a wide range of IMTE, including:
- Handheld multimeters
- Pressure gauges
- National Instruments (NI) equipment
- Torque wrenches and torque transducers
- Mechanical dimensional tools (calipers, micrometers, tape measures, pitapes, levels)
- Weld gauges (supporting >1,200 weld machines in production)
- Vision systems
- Execute high‑volume torque calibration and torque tool repair (a major function of this lab).
- Utilize measurement reference standards to validate IMTE against required tolerances and performance criteria.
- Support daily lab operations within a lean, fast‑paced environment.
- Use SpaceX internal systems to manage workflows and assets, including:
- Warp Drive (internal system)
- IndySoft (preferred commercial calibration software experience)
- TIM (internal customer portal for production/launch transactions)
- Perform automated calibrations where applicable using MetCal or similar systems; bonus points for candidates who can build MetCal procedures.
- Potential opportunity to support production floor calibrations after initial onboarding and training.
- Assist Metrology Engineering with process refinement, troubleshooting, and metrology best practices.
- Provide support to IMTE end users on proper measurement techniques and equipment handling.
- Maintain compliance with SpaceX Quality Management System, ISO 9001, AS9100D, and ISO/IEC 17025 (soft requirement, strongly preferred).
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or GED.
- 2+ years of experience in metrology, calibration, inspection, or dimensional measurement.
PREFERRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE- Formal U.S. military metrology training (Air Force PMEL, Navy Calibration, TMDE, etc.) – highly preferred.
- 4+ years of professional calibration or metrology experience.
- Experience in accredited ISO/IEC 17025 laboratories (commercial or defense).
- Strong background with high‑accuracy and high‑precision equipment.
- Experience with:
- Torque calibration & mechanical wrench repair
- National Instruments equipment
- NI Cal Exec
- MetCal (especially building procedures)
- IndySoft or other Metrology Information Systems
- Experience with XRF is a plus.
- Strong mechanical aptitude; experience with IMTE used on aerospace/production lines.
- Excellent troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
- ASQ Certified Calibration Technician (CCT) preferred but not required.
- Comfortable working in clean, organized labs; note: this is not a semiconductor-style cleanroom.
WORK ENVIRONMENT- One of the cleanest areas in facility, but not a strict cleanroom.
- Some work may occur in clean or “annie-room‑style” controlled areas as operations expand.
- Fast‑paced, hands‑on, highly collaborative environment.
- Best suited for individuals with low ego, high motivation, and disciplined work habits.
SCHEDULE- 12‑hour shifts (5 days/week):
- 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- 6:00 PM – 6:00 AM

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
